Tallassee Elementary students are engaged through hands-on learning opportunities they experience in the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics lab. Under the instruction of Mrs. Peyton Moore, the STEM experience is a time for students to be engaged and work collaboratively with peers. Students are able to explore various technology and learning tools while gathering information and planning to work through the Engineering Design process. Also, they have an opportunity to work through different outcomes of a project they encounter by asking questions, imagining alternative solutions, planning out steps they could take, and testing their completed project. In the STEM lab, reflection time is vital in the learning process. Students utilize this time to reflect on their completed projects by debriefing with their peers about what might have gone wrong during their building process. Also, they take pictures of their project to finalize their digital presentation.
At T.E.S., students work with a variety of STEM activities. They use their imaginations and problem-solving skills for each activity. Our lower grades are fascinated with using activity cards to create city building & engineering kits and different forms of transportation with Kid K’NEX. As students transition into the upper grades, we focus more on coding with computers and robots. Also, students are informed about electricity and circuits using our play-doh circuits and snap circuits. Within the electricity unit, students create a Makey Makey circuit board.
