A parent, guardian, or other person having charge of any child officially enrolled in Alabama public schools (K-12) shall explain in writing the cause of any and every absence of the child no later than three (3) school days following return to school. A failure to provide an approved excuse shall be evidence of the child being truant for each day of the absence.
NOTE: Only five parent excuses will be accepted for the entire school year. A doctor’s excuse is required after the fifth absence. This includes check ins/checkouts if the student misses more than 50% of the day.
Truancy Procedures and Unexcused Absence Notifications
- 1 or more- Parent Notification via email
- 2 or more- Parent Notification via email
- 3 or more- Parent Notification via email and conference with the attendance officer
- 4 or more- Parent Notification via email
- 5 or more- mandatory participation in the Early Warning Program provided by the Juvenile Court of Elmore County
- 7 Unexcused absences- File court complaint/petition against the child and/or parent/guardian
