Check your ParentSquare alerts and/or email for student absentee information. Search your email for powerschool.admin@tcschools.com if you do not see it in your inbox. Also, check your spam or junk folder if needed.

Tallassee City Schools is strictly required under Alabama’s compulsory school attendance laws to track unexcused absences, send notifications, and report truancy.

Alabama law requires all children between the ages of six and seventeen to attend school. If any child fails to attend school without legal excuse, that child and the person having custody of that child will be referred to the juvenile court.

Any child who is prosecuted for truancy may be placed in a juvenile facility or in long-term residential care. Any custodial adult who is prosecuted for failing to require a child to attend school may be jailed for up to one year or fined. Ala Code 16-28-12, Amended by Acts 1994, 1st Ex. Sess., No. 94-782, p. 70, §1.

A parent, guardian, or other person having charge of any child officially enrolled in Alabama public schools (K-12) shall explain in writing the cause of any and every absence of the child no later than three (3) school days following return to school. A failure to provide an approved excuse shall be evidence of the child being truant for each day of the absence.

NOTE: Only five parent excuses will be accepted for the entire school year. A doctor’s excuse is required after the fifth absence. This includes check ins/checkouts if the student misses more than 50% of the day.

Truancy Procedures and Unexcused Absence Notifications

• 1 or more- Parent Notification 
• 2 or more- Parent Notification 
• 3 or more- Parent Notification and conference with the attendance officer
• 4 or more- Parent Notification 
• 5 or more- Mandatory participation in the Early Warning Program provided by the Juvenile Court of Elmore County
• 7 Unexcused absences- File court complaint/petition against the child and/or parent/guardian
