October 1, 2025

Southside Middle School is committed to helping students make safe, responsible choices online. Beginning this October, all 7th-grade students will participate in the Alabama Department of Education’s Social Media Awareness Course, designed to ensure that every student understands the benefits and risks of social media use.

Program Overview

Students will independently complete three online learning units during Stem Lab and Band using their Ipads. Each unit takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Important: Progress is not saved within each unit, so students must complete a unit in one sitting.

After completing all three units, students will take a Comprehensive Knowledge Check. A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the course.

Course Schedule

  • Week of September 23, 2025 – Unit 1: Connecting for Good
  • Week of September 30, 2025 – Unit 2: Seeing the Downsides
  • Week of October 6, 2025 – Unit 3: Staying Safe Online
  • Week of October 20, 2025 – Comprehensive Knowledge Check

Students who do not meet the 80% passing requirement will have an opportunity to retake the lesson. The program will continue each week until all students have successfully completed the course.

Make-Up and Special Circumstances

All 7th graders are required to complete the course. Southside Middle School will develop a plan for make-up sessions for students who are absent, transfer midyear, or need additional time.

Teachers may provide accommodations for students with reading difficulties or limited English proficiency, including small group instruction, extended time, translated materials, read-aloud support, or quiet testing environments.

Documentation and Compliance

Completion will be recorded in PowerSchool on the student’s Compliance > AL Custom Page once the ALSDE adds the checkbox later this fall.
